Afghanistan: Taliban attack Kandahar airport

The Taliban on Tuesday attacked the Kandahar airport, the largest city in southern Afghanistan, and the fighting continued it in the evening, Afghan officials announced.
"The insurgents have managed to make a dent in the first complex of the gate (airport)," said Samim told AFP Khpalwak, a spokesman for the governor of Kandahar province.
According to spokesman of the army in Kandahar, Mohammad Mohsin Sultani, Afghan troops face an indefinite number of fighters.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, which comes on the eve of the visit of President Ashraf Ghani in Pakistan on the occasion of a regional conference, a visit that raised hopes of progress towards a resumption of the Afghan peace process.
"Several candidates for martyrdom equipped with light and heavy weapons entered Kandahar airport and attacked the invader forces," the Taliban said in a statement. "Fierce fighting is ongoing."
The offensive was launched after days of speculation about the fate of the Taliban leader, Akhtar Mansour, several sources said he had been seriously injured when an internal feud escalated.
The Taliban released Saturday presented an audio message as a statement of Mullah Mansour vehemently rejecting any shootout between Taliban leaders as the "enemy propaganda".
