Do you know what the new model Barbie was on sale? This is a black Barbie, who wears long braids, which is bearing the image of the African American film director Ava DuVernay.
In 17 minutes yesterday all of the Mattel Barbie Ava mark were sold.
I'm glad that Barbie is sold like hot cakes. This is proof that many little girls need to play with dolls which resemble them and which are not a realistic physical model.
But it is also proof that creative professions for women can be a role model for young people. Yep, the Barbie doll Ava comes with its own little director's chair!
WOMEN POWER
Ava DuVernay is this talented director of the film Selma, on the march for civil rights Martin Luther King in 1965. In 1965, nobody could have imagined that one day a Barbie black or a woman would realize films and would the boss on a tray.
The proof is that I myself am born in 1965 and at the time I can confirm that Barbie was blonde, white, wore high heels and the only jobs they exercised were hostesses air (as it was called then) or nurse.
Even in 2015, the number of women directors be counted on the fingers of one hand, the United States and Quebec. When they do a movie, they are told that it is a chick flick.
Much has been made this year sexism of Hollywood. Jennifer Lawrence published his famous essay on sexism, in which she said that the only reason she was paid less than his colleagues (Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale, Jeremy Renner ...) on the film American Hustle plate c ' is that they had a penis and she did not.
In recent months Emma Watson, Meryl Streep, Geena Davis, Cate Blanchett, Patricia Arquette, and Lena Dunham have all denounced one form or another of discrimination against women in the wonderful world of Hollywood.
I do not claim that the creation of a Barbie movie director will suddenly create excitement for this trade or that the mere creation of a position of authority doll will suddenly revolutionize the perception of women in Hollywood. But it is through this kind of gestures that gradually we show girls that being boss is really good. Than to be sitting in the chair of the "boss" is a model to achieve. And as for women in Hollywood there is not the "casting couch" there is also "the director's chair."
Now, when a Barbie with the image of Kathryn Bigelow, the first woman to win an Oscar for his film The Hurt Locker ... a real "movie guy"?
If Mattel made one, I bought it immediately to give to my future granddaughter.
